How to play

Draughts (English Checkers) is a two-player game on an 8×8 board. Each side starts with 12 pieces on the dark squares of the first three rows.

  • Men move one square diagonally forward. Kings move one square diagonally in any direction.
  • To capture, jump diagonally over an adjacent opponent piece into an empty square beyond it. If another capture is available from the landing square, you must continue jumping in the same turn.
  • Captures are compulsory — if any capture is available, you must take it.
  • A man that reaches the far rank is promoted to a king.
  • You win when your opponent has no pieces left or no legal move.

Computer difficulty: Easy plays a random legal move, Medium picks the best move one ply ahead, and Hard searches four plies using a piece-count and mobility heuristic.
